Max Haslam murdered Ruth Clarkson 74 by battering her to death at Clayton Street, Nelson on 19 June 1936. He had also hung her dog from the bedpost.

Max Haslam, who was a dwarf, had also stolen her jewellery and police soon found out that he had been pawning items that they determined to be Ruth Clarkson's. When they arrested him they found more jewellery on him as well as the back door key to Ruth Clarkson's house. They also found Max Haslam's bloody palm print in the house and bloodstains on his boots.

He had beaten her to death with an iron railing and a plank.
